Record numbers at agriculture festivals

"Over the summer months there has been a number of festivals throughout the province to celebrate our agriculture providing fun and recreation for families and visiting tourists," said Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods Kevin Aylward. "The Brigus Blueberry Festival and the Agriculture Farmers Field Day this past weekend were both huge successes. Both events attracted over 8000 people. Combined it represents 16,000 people over this weekend attending these two events."

Minister Aylward stated, "The Brigus Blueberry Festival has become one of the most successful festivals in the province. Through the dedication and hard word of people like Byron Rodway, chair of the festival, the success of this event keeps growing. With the displays, booths, children's games and music, there is something for all ages to enjoy. This festival continues to grow and become a stronger festival each year. The volunteers have done a wonderful job of organizing, promoting and delivering the event. The vast number of volunteers and businesses that assist in sponsoring these events are to be commended. As our agrifoods industry grows our province will continue to need the support of these people."

The minister added: "All throughout the province volunteers have organized festivals such as the Humber Valley Strawberry Festival and the Comfort Cove Fall Fair. There are many more planned and will continue through the fall. The harvesting season for most farmers is September and October. Trinity Conception, Green Bay, the Codroy Valley and the Humber Valley will all host agricultural fairs in September. The Provincial 4-H will host one in Clarenville in October."

"The Newfoundland Agriculture industry is dynamic and growing. Its growth rate currently exceeds that of the maritime and national average. It consists of approximately 741 farms occupying 47,350 hectares of land. In 1997, the agriculture industry contributed $73.6 million into the provincial economy," said Mr. Aylward.
