Outdoor fire ban lifted for province

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister, Kevin Aylward, announced today that the outdoor fire ban currently in effect for forest land in Newfoundland and Labrador will be lifted effective midnight tonight, July 29.

"Recent wet weather and cooler temperatures we have experienced have reduced the forest fire threat throughout many areas of the province," said Aylward. "Accordingly, forestry officials feel conditions allow for authorized burning to take place in and around forested areas."

Despite revoking the fire ban order at this point in time Aylward advised the public that the ban will be re-instated if necessary. "Forestry officials will not hesitate to reinstate the fire ban if weather and forest conditions warrant," stated the minister.

Minister Aylward also asked everyone to continue to exercise extreme caution when traveling throughout the forests of the province. He said: "Although the lifting of this outdoor fire ban will allow many people to do such things as burn brush and light camp fires it is extremely important that people remain aware of the potential danger that exists when dealing with fire in and around forest areas."

The public is reminded that permits are required when setting a fire for the purpose of clearing land or burning brush, slash etc. on forest land or within 300 metres of forest land. Permits to Burn are required until midnight of September 13, 1999 and can be obtained at Newfoundland Forest Service District offices throughout the province.
