Warm dry weather causes concerns for forest officials

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, stated today: "To date, there have been 178 fires reported with approximately 45,000 hectares burnt. There are presently over 36 fires active, 23 in Labrador. Most of these fires are small and contained and are being monitored for hot spots. The other serious fires are at Red Indian Lake, North Twin Lake (near Badger) and Ming's Bight (Baie Verte Peninsula).

"When fires break out it takes a toll on our natural resources. Great tracts of valuable timber are devastated, wildlife is destroyed, and communities are often threatened. What is happening in Badger right now should help to heighten our awareness of public safety and how easily a fire can get out of control. Although the fire near Badger has been contained, with no flame, there are a number of hot spots which are being actioned by 45 personnel, eight pump units and two helicopters. Waterbombers will be used where necessary," said Mr. Aylward.

The minister added that: "Last year, the total hectares destroyed was 40,000. We have already surpassed that amount and are expecting the warm dry weather to continue. With the weather conditions as they are, it is so important that all users of our forests be safety conscious and remember there is a ban on all outdoor fires in our province.

"Newfoundlanders and Labradorians enjoy the forests, especially this time of year. I want to encourage everyone to remember to play safe. Fighting fires is our job, preventing forest fires is up to every citizen and user of our forests," stated Minister Aylward.
