Minister announces ban on open fires

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, today proclaimed a ban on the setting of outdoor fires effective at midnight tonight. The ban will remain in place until current conditions improve.

A short winter, early spring and long spell of warm dry weather has made the province's forests extremely dry and susceptible to fires. As of today, there have been a total of 132 fires which have burned approximately 37,000 hectares of forest. The forest fire index for the majority of the province presently ranges from medium to extreme.

"The department has taken this measure in order to insure public safety and to minimize the damage to the forests of Newfoundland and Labrador," Minister Aylward stated. "While all fires are not caused by people, this ban will certainly help to cut down on the possible danger. I also ask, while you are enjoying camping or other outdoor activities, you use caution with other forms of fire such as cigarettes and matches. It is only through the cooperation of the general public that we will be able to minimize the risk."

Under the proclamation, all permits to burn that have been issued to date are immediately cancelled and all outdoor fires in all locations and for purposes normally exempt under the Forest Fire Regulations and the Forestry Act will be prohibited. This includes open pit fire places and barbecues.

However, the use of propane or gas stoves or the use of self-contained units such as propane or charcoal barbecues are not banned provided the normal Forest Fire Regulations are followed.

Anyone who does not comply with the proclamation and the conditions may be fined a minimum of $1,000.
