Tree seedling planting project approved for Fischell's River

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and MHA - St. George's-Stephenville East, announced today the awarding of a $20,716.28 contract for tree seedling planting at Fischell's River in the district.

"Samson Holdings of Harbour Breton will plant more than a quarter million seedlings, primarily black and white spruce, on 110.8 hectares," said Mr. Aylward. "This planting will restock areas where crop species have not regenerated sufficiently. Planting is done at a prescribed density of 2,500 seedlings per hectare. This ensures that the preferred crop tree species develop at a uniform spacing to promote growth for future harvesting.

"Carefully managed reforestation projects like this one are vital elements of our department's ecosystem management plan. We are not only concerned about preserving the province's wood supply, we are pleased to see the economic benefits to local communities each season. Planting and regenerating our forest resources also supports future harvests and helps sustain Newfoundland and Labrador's lumber and sawmilling industries."

The minister added: "So far this season, our silviculture operations - planting, thinning and site preparation - have provided employment for almost 200 people in rural regions of the province and will treat over 2,000 hectares."

The Fischell's River project begins June 21 and runs for four weeks and will create 15 jobs.
