Provincial conservation officers supporting
1999 Law Enforcement Torch Run

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, today congratulated the department's conservation officers and officials for supporting the 1999 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. This year represents the 10th anniversary of the Torch Run for Special Olympics and the second year that Newfoundland and Labrador has been recognized internationally for raising the most financial support per capita.

Minister Aylward stated: "Two of our department's officials presently sit on the Provincial Committee along with other law enforcement agency representatives. This run is very important to the Special Olympics athletes, both for the financial support and for the moral support it provides. I am very proud of the effort and support given to the Law Enforcement Torch Run by our conservation officers and by our officials."

Runners from each law enforcement agency representing the 1999 Torch Run marked the official opening of the Run on June 4 at Port aux Basques. During the past week, local and continuous runs have occurred across the island and throughout communities in Labrador.

The run will conclude Friday, June 11, at the Pearl Gate Track and Field Centre in Mount Pearl. Runners, accompanied by Special Olympics athletes, will carry the torch to light the official flame to mark the opening of the 1999 Special Olympic Summer Games.
