Tree planting contract awarded in
St. George's-Stephenville East District

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and MHA for St. George's-Stephenville East, today announced approval of a silviculture contract for tree planting on 191 hectares of productive forest land in the district.

Samson Holdings of Harbour Breton was awarded the contract and will be planting mostly white spruce, plus some black spruce and larch seedlings in the Main Gut area.

The intent of this contract is to plant tree seedlings on forest sites which are presently inadequately stocked in order to establish a vigorous, uniformly spaced, fully stocked plantation of suitable tree species.

"This project contributes a great deal to maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem. Reforestation is vital to the long term viability of our forests in Newfoundland and Labrador," Minister Aylward stated. "Such silviculture projects have a positive impact on the forest sector and generate much needed seasonal employment."

The Main Gut project will take place from June 1 to June 11, and July 12 to July 23, giving 15 to 20 people four to five weeks employment.
