Seedling planting contract awarded in Lewisporte District

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today the awarding of a $57,569.75 seedling planting contract to be carried out in the Exploits Bay area.

Tercan Holdings Inc. of Campbellton will plant more than 800,000 black spruce, red pine, white spruce and white pine seedlings. The seedlings will be distributed on 335 hectares in need of reforestation. This will establish a vigorous, uniformly spaced plantation, fully stocked with suitable tree species.

"One of the Newfoundland Forest Service's priorities is to revive previously harvested forests as soon as possible to commercially viable production levels. Reforestation on this scale is an important factor in maintaining our forests as a healthy ecosystem, and contributing to their long-term viability," Minister Aylward stated. "Major reforestation projects benefit not only our forest industries sector, but local communities as well, by creating worthwhile seasonal employment. This project will generate jobs for 20 people in the area."

The six-week project is tentatively set to begin June 7.
