Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program - May 14-16

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, today announced that his department has scheduled the fifth Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) Program for Newfoundland and Labrador. This outdoor skills training program will be held at the Lavrock Centre, Salmonier Line, May 14-16.

This program offers women, 18 years of age and older, the opportunity to pursue outdoor activities by assisting them in the learning of the necessary skills or knowledge. BOW is designed to remove barriers and build strong earth connections in a relaxed and supportive environment.

During the BOW weekend, participants learn about kayaking, canoeing, rifle and shotgun skills, outdoor survival and plant identification, to name a few. Registration cost is $135 for two nights accommodations, seven meals, all instruction and use of demonstration equipment. There are also some scholarships available for single mothers or students who may require financial assistance. These scholarships are donated by local organizations and businesses.

The program has been very successful with an average of 100 participants and 30 instructors and volunteers attending each workshop. The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods is the primary sponsor of the Becoming an Outdoors Woman Program and has received tremendous support from local businesses, organizations and volunteers. It is this community support that allows BOW to be such a success.
