Inter-governmental workshop important beginning to inter-agency approach on ecosystem health

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, views the recent inter-governmental workshop on ecosystem health an outstanding success.

As a result of this workshop, co-hosted by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and Natural Resources Canada - Canadian Forest Service, there is now a heightened awareness and a greater spirit of cooperation towards the maintenance of ecosystem health.

"The large number of agencies and disciplines which have embraced this relatively new paradigm of environmental and resource management have received necessary and important focus during this workshop," Minister Aylward said. "The individuals who have contributed their time and expertise to this workshop have made this an important first step to developing and implementing an ecosystem health strategy. I am confident that the high level of enthusiasm and interest expressed throughout the workshop will lead to management and research initiatives that will improve our ability to maintain the health of the province's ecosystems."

Over 100 senior managers and scientists from several government agencies and Memorial University were there to examine key issues related to ecosystem health.

The delegation examined existing mechanisms for ensuring the health of the ecosystem. They assessed options to improve current management and made recommendations on the importance of the flow of information. They also assessed a framework for ecosystem management and future cooperation between various agencies.
