Forestry support expands in Labrador

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced today an increase in operational support and fire suppression capabilities for Labrador.

Mr. Aylward stated: "There are additional positions for the Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Churchill Falls and Hopedale offices. In addition, a new office had been built in Cartwright to accommodate three permanent, one temporary and three seasonal staff involved in operations/implementation and fire suppression activities. In reference to forest fire suppression equipment throughout the region, it enables this department to respond faster to the threat of wildfires. Also, fire weather conditions are monitored at more stations giving us a better understanding of fire weather."

"This increase in funding is a reflection on the sheer size and volume of the timber and wildlife resources in Labrador," said Mr. Aylward.
