Province participates in Agriculture Income Disaster Assistance Program

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, announced the provincial commitment to the Agriculture Income Disaster Assistance Program (AIDA) at approximately $300,000 for 1999/2000. The federal-provincial program is designed to provide assistance to farmers who face dramatic declines in net income as a result of factors beyond their control and for which existing programs cannot provide assurance of continuing the farm business.

Mr. Aylward said: "The program is being implemented over two years and is open to anyone who files income tax returns as a farmer and whose net farm income falls below 70 per cent of their average over the previous three years. This whole farm program is designed to be both compatible and complementary to existing federal-provincial safety net programs which include stabilizing programs such as the National Income Stabilization Account (NISA), Enhanced NISA and Crop Insurance."

The details of the program will be available over the coming weeks and applications will be available in all the regional offices by the end of March. A series of workshops will be held in April and May to assist staff and producers in participating in the program.

Mr. Aylward said: "Combined with the Agricultural Safety Nets Program, this program will provide farmers with the appropriate government support to ensure we continue to have a viable agrifoods industry."
