Memorandum of Understanding signed for fisheries initiatives in Baccalieu Economic Development Zone

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister R. John Efford signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this afternoon with the Baccalieu Board of Economic Development on fisheries development opportunities for the Baccalieu Economic Development Zone.

The MOU is an agreement between the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Baccalieu board to work together on economic development as it pertains to fishery and aquaculture initiatives.

Mr. Efford said he is very pleased that his department and the Baccalieu board are partnering to help create economic growth for the region.

"The fishery today is a new, diversified fishery and this MOU is part of our aggressive program in fisheries diversification, and creating a more viable and sustainable fishing industry. Also, this agreement demonstrates that the Regional Economic Develop Board (REDB) process is working effectively as these MOUs are important tools in advancing economic development throughout the province."

Mr. Efford said his department is committed to working with the Baccalieu board and providing technical support and advice for fisheries initiatives such as investigating new resource opportunities, potential cod grow-out development, research and development for eel grow-out, and various aquaculture-related initiatives.

Gord Stone, president of the Baccalieu Board of Economic Development said: "This MOU signifies that the zonal board and government agree that the fishery remains the key to the future welfare of our province. We are excited about this partnership with the provincial fisheries department and we look forward to a continued positive working relationship in terms of economic development for this area."

Mr. Efford added that he is confident that this partnership is the beginning of positive things for the economy of the Baccalieu Economic Development Zone.

"The fishery is and will remain the backbone of our province and the signing of this MOU is an important element in our work to continue the revitalization of our fishing industry and create long term economic opportunities in rural Newfoundland and Labrador."

The MOU signing took place at Fong's Restaurant in Carbonear.
