Minister advises fish harvesters that quality standards and regulations will be strictly enforced at dockside and appropriate action taken if quality issues occur

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister John Efford today said that he is encouraged by what appears to be the beginning of a recovery in the groundfish industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. However, he said, given that the temperature both in the water and aboard vessels is higher than the norm this year, and that will be especially so during July and August, fishermen must ensure that all precautions are taken so that their landed catches are handled according to the specifications set out in the fisheries regulations.

To that end, the minister advises fishermen that departmental inspection staff will be posted at the major landing sites throughout the province to monitor and strictly enforce fisheries regulations. "In that way," he continued, "we will ensure that quality standards are being adhered to. In particular, I want to ensure that fish is properly gutted, bled and iced and that handling and holding procedures are being met. In addition, landings from gill nets will be closely monitored for quality and should problems arise the department will take appropriate action."

Mr. Efford stated: "Our quality assurance initiative began some three-and-a-half years ago and involved extensive consultations and meetings throughout the province with all industry stakeholders, particularly fish harvesters and fish processors. The results of this exercise have been extremely positive and supported by the industry. This has resulted in significant improvements in the overall quality of Newfoundland and Labrador fish entering the market place."

"I am committed to ensuring that the quality of fish being landed and processed in the province is of the highest quality. My department wants to work with fishermen and other industry stakeholders to achieve this goal. We must strive for excellence; anything less is not acceptable."
