Steady growth in province's mussel industry

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture John Efford said today that the province's mussel industry is experiencing steady growth and remains an important contributor to the ongoing development of the aquaculture industry.

"I'm happy to report that more mussels are being produced in the province, and there are more options for the mussel farmer in terms of where they can sell their products; this is the result of an alliance between growers, producers and marketers," said the minister.

The minister pointed out that there are a number of mussel marketing companies now established in the province, including two companies that are involved in secondary processing.

In 1998, the aquaculture sector in the province produced 2,800 tonnes of product, with an estimated market value of $12.9 million. Mr. Efford said of that amount, 1,000 tonnes of mussels were produced for a production value of $1.9 million and that mussel production is expected to double in 1999.

Mr. Efford added that the new Shellfish Aquaculture Working Capital Fund valued at $5 million will play an important role in the growth of mussel production this year.

"The Shellfish Aquaculture Working Capital Fund was late getting underway in 1998, but in 1999 we hope that more people will access this funding, which will assist in the growth of our mussel industry. This funding will address the need identified for working capital to finance aquaculture expansion," said Mr. Efford.
