Minister participates in SSP's central region meeting

Julie Bettney, Minister of Human Resources and Employment and lead minister for the Strategic Social Plan (SSP), recently attended a meeting of the SSP's Central Region Steering Committee in Gander. As part of the implementation process for the plan the steering committee is developing a demonstration project which will explore the best way to ensure that individuals and communities in the central region are full participants in the Strategic Social Plan. The committee consists of representatives from the boards of health, education, and economic development, College of the North Atlantic, the Federation of Municipalities, and the Department of Development and Rural Renewal, the Department of Human Resources and Employment, and the Cabinet Secretariat, all working together to address social and economic development in the region.

"A fundamental principle of the Strategic Social Plan is to provide an opportunity for people to chart future social and economic development in their communities. The Central Region Steering Committee is developing a process which will encourage this participation," said Minister Bettney. "I was delighted to have the opportunity to spend time with the committee and take part in the discussions surrounding the growth of this initiative. The groundwork the central committee is doing will provide valuable information which will be shared with other regions as the implementation of the plan continues throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

The chair of the Central Region Steering Committee, Walwyn Blackmore was pleased Minister Bettney was able to participate. "With her background in strategic planning, Ms. Bettney and the steering committee accomplished some significant progress with the steering committee's demonstration project. As a group of individuals involved in social and economic development, it is very gratifying to be playing such as major role in the implementation of the SSP," said Mr. Blackmore.

The Strategic Social Plan focuses on new and innovative approaches to social development, the coordination of services and linking social and economic development efforts. The goal is to support an environment in which citizens participate more fully in their communities. The Strategic Social Plan has been initiated in the central region. The plan will be implemented in two other regions this winter.
