Premier announces chair for Council on Social Development

Premier Brian Tobin, today announced the appointment of Katherine Daley as chair of the Premier's Council on Social Development (PCSD).

Ms. Daley has served as a member of the Premier's Council on Social Development since its formation in August of 1998. Ms. Daley holds a Master's Degree in Education, a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University, a Diploma in Nursing Education from Dalhousie University, a Diploma in Nursing from St. Joseph's Hospital in Nova Scotia, and a General Education Diploma from Memorial University. Before her recent retirement, Ms. Daley served as Director of the Center for Nursing Studies and Director of St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, School of Nursing.

Premier Tobin highlighted the vast scope of experience Ms. Daley can reference from 40 years experience in the health care sector. "Katherine will move forward the mandate identified by the council in their formative year. Her esteemed career as a health practitioner, educator and administrator offers Ms. Daley a solid understanding of the social environment of our province and a clear vision of how social policy and planning can be enhanced," said Premier Tobin.

Julie Bettney, Lead Minister for the Strategic Social Plan (SSP), offered her congratulations to Ms. Daley. "The Premier's Council on Social Development has a major role in guiding the implementation of the Strategic Social Plan. I am confident that Ms. Daley's experience as a senior manager in the field of health care will provide essential leadership skills and direction as the implementation of the SSP continues."

The members of the Premier's Council on Social Development were appointed for their expertise in matters related to social development as well as their ability to reflect the diverse views of the regions of the province. The council provides valuable advice on social policy, social development and the implementation of the Strategic Social Plan. Recognizing that a strong economy is based on healthy, educated people, Premier Tobin has asked the council to participate in this economic strategy and provide advice on the role of social policy and the community-based sector in economic development. The Working Group of the Premier's Council on Social Development will research, develop and present views to the Ministers' Committee on the Strategy for Jobs and Growth by early December.
