Premier participates in Fly the Flag of Remembrance Ceremony

Premier Brian Tobin and officials of the Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion participated in a flag raising ceremony today in the foyer of Confederation Building. The ceremony, which commenced at noon, commemorated the 54th anniversary of the end of World War II and recognized the service and achievement of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians at home and overseas during the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean Conflict.

Premier Tobin said Remembrance Week activities, including the Raise the Flag of Remembrance ceremony, are indeed special and significant occasions. "They present for all of us an opportunity to reflect on the heroism our veteran's displayed. The Royal Canadian Legion deserves special praise for its efforts to keep alive the memory of those who fought and those who died so that we could live in a free society."

Royal Canadian Legion Command Remembrance Chair, Bill Titford, noted: "The ceremony serves as the kick-off for Remembrance Week throughout the province, which is being observed from November 1 - 11. Remembrance Week provides a unique opportunity for people to remember the courage, devotion and sacrifices of those who fought or lost their life in the World Wars and the Korean Conflict."

Premier Tobin said Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Flags will be flown during Remembrance Week at Confederation Building to honour the memory of all those who fought and distinguished themselves in world conflicts. Premier Tobin and representatives from the Royal Canadian Legion also signed proclamations commemorating the Remembrance Week poppy campaign and the Two Minute Wave of Silence, which will be held on November 11, 1999 at 11 a.m.. This special initiative, designed to mark the last Remembrance Day of the century, will begin in Newfoundland and Labrador and move across Canada's time zones like a wave.
