The following is being distributed at the request of the Civic Centre Construction Board:

St. John's Civic Centre Contract Awarded

Peter Kennedy, chairperson of the Civic Centre Construction Board, announced today that a contract for $2,125,000 has been awarded to Marco Construction Ltd. of St. John's. The contract covers foundations and structural steel for the convention centre component of the project, which is located on the south side of New Gower Street.

Work is expected to begin on this contract within the next two weeks. Marco Construction Ltd. submitted the low tender from five bids submitted.

Mr. Kennedy said that work is proceeding on schedule in respect of a contract awarded to Olympic Construction of St. John's for foundations and structural steel components for the spectator facility, which is located on the north side of New Gower Street. This contract was awarded in July and progress is being made with the installation of concrete walls, support columns, and related infrastructure and services.

Work packages on the St. John's Civic Centre are being tendered on a phased basis and additional contracts are expected to be called this fall. Tenders awarded to date are within the $36 million approved budget for the project.

Approval to award this tender was given at this week's meeting of St. John's City Council, on the recommendation of the Civic Centre Construction Board.
