Minister to represent province at Francophone Summit

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Walter Noel will represent the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador at the 8th Francophone Summit in Moncton on September 3 and 4.

Since 1986, 52 member countries with french as a common language have met every two years to discuss common interests. Prime Minister Chretien will chair this year's summit in Moncton, with the support of the Secretary-General of the Francophonie, Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

"The francophone community in our province has made great strides over the last few years, working with government to ensure the French language is preserved," Minister Noel stated. "In 1997, the provincial and federal governments committed to establishing a francophone school board for Newfoundland and Labrador, and we have continued to work with the federal government to help promote the use of both official languages. Our province has a vibrant and active francophone community, so it's very appropriate that we are joining the other Atlantic provinces in being present at this prestigious international event."

Minister Noel noted that he would be present for the Summit's opening ceremonies at Universit de Moncton on September 3, and would attend a meeting between French President Jacques Chirac and the Acadian Community at Memramcook on September 4.

As Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister Noel is responsible for co-ordinating the province's interests with federal, provincial, and foreign governments.
