The following is being distributed at the request of the Central Region Steering Committee, Strategic Social Plan: Steering Committee established to implement Strategic Social Plan in Central Region A steering committee has been established to facilitate the Strategic Social Plan process in the Central Region. The steering committee is comprised of two representatives, including trustees and senior staff, from each of the 10 boards of health, education and economic development in the region and the Central Regional Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities. Support is provided by Edmund Hayden, Manager of Regional and Community Partnerships with the Strategic Social Plan Unit of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Boards in the region are coming together to plan for optimal use of their resources, to coordinate services where appropriate, and to plan for integrated social and economic development of the region. The goal is to further engage communities in the Strategic Social Plan decision-making process. The Central Region extends, in the north, from White Bay across Notre Dame Bay to Terra Nova National Park, and in the south, from McCallum to Rencontre East, including the Connaigre Peninsula. This region of the province has been selected as the initial region in which to implement the plan because of joint readiness of boards in the area, expressions of interest by the region, and the existence of board boundaries that have minimal overlap with other regions. Work completed in the Central Region will help guide a process to implement the plan in remaining regions. The 10 boards of health, education and economic development in the Central Region met in Grand Falls-Windsor for the first time on May 26, 1999. Board members later met in Lewisporte to begin implementing the Strategic Social Plan. People, Partners and Prosperity: A Strategic Social Plan (SSP) for Newfoundland and Labrador is a framework for social action which identifies government's major social strategies and sets its long term goals. The plan also sets out a community development process which will engage people, communities and regions in working with government to achieve social and economic prosperity. Media contact:
