Intergovernmental Affairs Minister in Ottawa

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Walter Noel is in Ottawa this week to meet with federal ministers, M.P.s, and Senators on issues of importance to the province.

He hopes to meet with all the M.P.s and Senators from the province during the trip. "As Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, my role is to coordinate the province's relations with the Government of Canada, other provinces and territories, and foreign governments," Noel said. "I want to forge a stronger and more cooperative relationship with the federal government and our representatives in Ottawa. As a small province, we need to work diligently to advance our interests in Canada's federal system."

Minister Noel will also meet with a number of federal ministers during the week on several priority issues for the province. He plans to discuss transportation issues with Transport Minister David Collenette, and meet with National Defence Minister Arthur Eggleton about enhancing military spending in the province. "It's important that we work to increase the federal presence in Newfoundland and Labrador," Minister Noel said. "It's not only a matter of getting our fair share of federal spending, it's also to ensure national services are provided to the degree required by our residents."

Minister Noel will also meet with Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Stephane Dion, Industry Minister John Manley, and Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray to pursue provincial priorities.
