Premier announces funding for family resource centre

Premier Brian Tobin today announced funding for a family resource centre in the northern region of the province. The centre will receive $50,000 to cover start up costs and will be located in St. Anthony, with outreach sites in St. Lunaire-Griquet, Roddickton and West St. Modeste. Other sites may be determined as the project unfolds.

"Investing in the children and families of Newfoundland and Labrador is a priority for this government," said Premier Tobin. "Funding projects such as family resource centres reflect government's commitment to the Strategic Social Plan."

This family resource centre is funded through the National Child Benefit Provincial Reinvestment Plan and places particular emphasis on children ages 0-6 years old and their caregivers. The centre provides a range of supportive and early intervention services for low income families and their children, and may include parenting workshops, community kitchens and early literacy activities.

"Through the Strategic Social Plan, the government is forming effective partnerships and more community involvement in regional development activities," said Premier Tobin. "By working together government and local organizations can better address the needs and concerns of people in the province, and in this case, northern Newfoundland and Labrador."

The Northern Community Learning Network and the Labrador Straits Family Resource Centre Outreach Project have recently come together to begin this project.

Government has already implemented a number of initiatives in keeping with its new social policy direction. These initiatives, among others, have included a strategic literacy plan and youth employment programs.
