Release of publication on violence

Julie Bettney, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, today announced the release of a peer education manual for preventing violence against women in Newfoundland and Labrador entitled, Understanding Violence Against Women. This publication was produced by the Provincial Strategy Against Violence.

"The goal of this manual is to promote community awareness of the problem of violence against women in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Bettney. "This peer education manual provides background analysis and educational materials which individuals and community groups can use to educate themselves about violence and how they can help prevent violence."

The manual is designed as a tool for individuals or community groups to utilize in understanding and preventing violence. It examines types of violence, why violence happens against women, and the effects of violence on women and families. The manual also provides tools and fact sheets which individuals and community groups can use to educate themselves as well as guides for discussion groups and workshops. Included in the manual is a list of the many Newfoundland and Labrador groups which provide services and support to those affected by violence.

Five hundred copies of this publication will be distributed to various community organizations around the province who are working to address the problems of violence and to help individuals who are victims of violence.
