House of Assembly to open March 16

Government House Leader (Acting) Charles Furey today announced the first session of the forty-fourth General Assembly of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador will commence March 16, 1999 with the Speech from the Throne.

"The Throne Speech and Budget will set out government's strategy for the coming session," said Minister Furey. "Government will be undertaking a number of major initiatives in the coming months, among them a Tobacco Control Act and a new Municipalities Act."

Minister Furey said that government's focus will continue to be on health and education as it moves forward with its economic and social policy agendas.

The Speech from the Throne will be delivered by Lieutenant-Governor Dr. A.M. House.
