Premier offers condolences to family of late Honourable William Petten

Premier Brian Tobin today offered condolences to the family of the late Honourable William Petten, retired senator. Mr. Petten passed away suddenly Saturday in Ottawa.

"Bill Petten's career was proof positive of the tremendously, important role to be played by senators in Canada's chamber of `sober second thought'. Bill was a committed advocate and articulate voice for Newfoundland and Labrador in the Senate of Canada," said Premier Tobin. "This was clearly evident in his successful efforts to pilot Bill C-29, legislation enabling Canada to extend its jurisdiction beyond two hundred miles to deal with the threat of foreign vessels on the high seas, through the Senate."

William Petten began his political career in 1968 upon his appointment to the Senate of Canada. During his career, he served in various capacities including Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate, Government Whip, and on numerous committees including Fisheries, Transport, and Legal and Constitutional Affairs. Mr. Petten retired from the Senate in January of 1998.

"On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Jodean and I offer our deepest sympathy to Bill's family, especially his wife Bernice and children, Sharon, Robin, Raylene and William," said Premier Tobin. "Our thoughts are with them through this difficult time."
