Premier pleased with Supreme Court ruling on Term 17

Premier Brian Tobin said that he is pleased with today's Supreme Court of Newfoundland ruling by Justice David Riche which upholds the constitutionality of Term 17.

"This Supreme Court ruling settles all outstanding issues surrounding Term 17 and education reform," said Premier Tobin. "The court has ruled that Term 17 is valid, that the proper amending formula was used, and that the referendum held here in the province was valid.

"It is time to end the debate on this issue and get on with the business of school reform. I call upon the Church to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court and concentrate on the needs of the children of this province. Already we have made significant strides in reforming the school system by making significant reinvestment in priority areas. With todays decision, we can continue with those efforts unencumbered."
