Premier Tobin comments on Innu "shift in strategy"

Premier Brian Tobin said today that he is puzzled about the motives of the Innu Nation in announcing what they call "a major shift in strategy for dealing with governments and resource developments."

"Of course there are differences of opinion between the Innu Nation and government," said Premier Tobin. "Differing positions are inherent in any negotiations. But there is an established process to deal with these matters, and the least productive action we can take is to negotiate in the media."

"This government has been fair and open in its dealings with the Innu Nation. I have always been, and I remain, prepared to meet with the Innu to discuss any of their concerns," noted the premier. "However, until today I had not even received a request for such a meeting. I regret that the leadership of the Innu Nation felt that this was the proper course of action, when far more productive channels are always open to them."

Land claims negotiations with the Innu Nation are scheduled to resume in St. John's next week. Lower Churchill discussions were also expected to resume from the Christmas break in the near future.
