Waste management projects approved

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, and John Efford, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Port-de-Grave, are pleased to announce approval of two projects under the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.

Approval has been given for a $10,977 grant for the Port-de-Grave Recreation Committee to clean up garbage and litter in and around Ship Cove Pond. The recreation committee submitted an application for partial funding to undertake a clean-up initiative for the area. This initiative will improve the natural beauty of the area by cleaning garbage and litter that has collected along the Ship Cove Pond area.

Also, approval has been given for a $25,000 grant to the Environment Committee of Spaniard's Bay to continue their efforts cleaning up the litter and debris that has accumulated along the roadside.

"Both of these initiatives are very worthwhile projects that will significantly improve environmental conditions in the area," said Minister Langdon. "These are exactly the kinds of projects that we wanted to encourage when we established the Waste Management Trust Fund and I applaud both communities for taking advantage of this progressive, community-based environmental initiative."

Minister Efford said: "I am extremely pleased to see citizens take pride in their communities and participate in initiatives to improve our environment. We all have important roles to play in protecting our environment and these two projects will help create a healthier environment, as well as build on the beautification of our towns."

The Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund is the most progressive community-based environmental program ever introduced in the province. The program is administered by the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board and provides partial funding for waste management and environmental initiatives.
