Grant for three St. John's Clean and Beautiful environmental projects
 from Waste Management Trust Fund

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, and Lloyd Matthews, MHA - St. John's North and Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, are pleased to announce that St. John's Clean and Beautiful has received approval for three environmental projects under the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.

The committee will receive a grant for $12,250 in support of their fall clean-up campaign to encourage city residents to clean-up around their homes, neighbourhoods, schools and businesses.

"The fall clean-up campaign has many benefits including improving the environment and fostering pride in one's community and property," said Minister Langdon. "This project will increase public awareness and contribute to a cleaner environment."

The St. John's Clean and Beautiful Committee will also receive a grant in the amount of $50,000 towards the "Take Pride in Your City" campaign. This funding will be used to develop a communications and awareness raising initiative aimed at delivering a strong anti-littering message to the residents of the province to encourage community pride and responsibility.

The third project which will receive partial funding in the amount of $23,700 under the Trust Fund is the "Take Pride...Take Action" spring clean-up campaign. This campaign aims at encouraging schools, businesses, neighbourhoods, community groups, individuals, environmental organizations and any other groups to adopt a location in the community and ensure it remains clean.

"The Take Pride...Take Action project has been very successful in the city and across the province," said Minister Matthews. "This program originated in St. John's in 1993 and has sparked interest across the province. I believe this program will continue to be successful and I am pleased that we are able to support it further under the trust fund."

The Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund is the most progressive community-based environmental program ever introduced in the province. The program is administered by the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board and provides partial funding for waste management and environmental initiatives.
