Grant for the Newfoundland
Environmental Industry Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, is pleased to announce funding approval for two projects for the Newfoundland Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) under the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund. NEIA will receive a grant for $50,000 towards the production of a five-part, half-hour cable television program series that addresses a number of issues pertinent to all stakeholders in the environmental industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. The television program will be aired throughout the province, delivering a dynamic promotional campaign to educate all citizens of the province on important environmental issues including waste management and recycling. In addition, NEIA has been granted $18,371 towards the development and delivery of a series of seminars aimed at improving operations at four municipal landfills in the province. NEIA hopes to provide training that will give landfill operators and administrators the ability to make the best use of their current facilities. These seminars will cover such topics as safety, traffic, litter control, preventative maintenance, soil management, etc. With these skills participating landfill operators will have the ability to reduce litter, operational costs and extend the useful life of a landfill. "These are both very worthwhile environmental education and training initiatives that will significantly contribute to a greater understanding of waste management issues and practices," said Minister Langdon. "Initiatives such as these are important to the growth and development of the environmental industry in our province." The Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund is the most progressive community based environmental program ever introduced in the province. The program is administered by the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board and provides partial funding for waste management and environmental initiatives.
