Westport environmental study continues

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon stated today that AGRA Earth and Environmental is continuing its environmental investigations at Westport and the study is expected to conclude shortly.

To date, the consultant has received the results of 52 soil samples from the plant property and from areas surrounding the site. The consultant expects to have the remaining soil sample results by this Friday and the results of the water supply and distribution system by next week.

Sampling on and immediately around the plant property showed low levels of hydrocarbon contamination. In addition, trace levels of PCB contamination were found in four test pits.

The final report from the consultant is not expected to be completed until next week. "Once I have received and reviewed the consultant's report I want to discuss the findings with the community of Westport," said Minister Langdon. "Until then, government officials will continue to meet and discuss issues with the community liaison committee as appropriate."

The minister also stated that the Department of Health and Community Services is continuing its study into cancer rates in Westport and the results of that study will be made available as soon as the report is complete.
