Environmental assessment bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown

for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Davidsville Auto Salvage and Recycling
Proponent: Harvey Rowe's Scrap Yard

The proponent proposes to construct an auto salvage and recycling facility in the community of Davidsville, approximately 4.8 kilometres from the turnoff at Gander Bay Road. The proposal involves construction of a garage and operation of a metal salvage yard to process scrap metal, storage of wrecks, recover reusable auto parts and crush car bodies. The undertaking was registered on September 29, 1999; public comments are due on November 3, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on November 13, 1999.

Forest Management Plan District 16 (White Bay South) Amendment
Proponent: Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods

The proponent proposes an amendment to the five-year operating plan for Forest Management District 16 along the coast in White Bay South for commercial operators to harvest timber in three new areas near Frenchman's Cove, Saltwater Pond, and north of Browns Cove. The amendment is required for the introduction of a new method of accessing timber using helicopter to lift wood from the slopes and drop in the water along the coast where it will be barged or towed in a boom to a dryland port. The plan amendment proposes the harvesting of 25,000 cubic metres of timber over a 342 hectare area. The undertaking was registered on September 30, 1999; public comments are due on November 4, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on November 14, 1999.

Old Mans Pond (Northwest End) Cottage Access Road
Proponent: Carson L. Park

The proponent plans to construct a 1.2 kilometre road to access five cottage lots on the northwest end of Old Mans Pond, near Goose Arm in Western Newfoundland. Construction of the road is planned to begin in the fall of 1999 and will take approximately five days to complete. The undertaking was registered on October 5, 1999; public comments are due on November 5, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on November 19, 1999.
