Gisborne Lake Environmental Impact Statement accepted by minister

The Minister of Environment and Labour, Oliver Langdon, announced today that he has accepted the environmental impact statement for the proposed water export project at Gisborne Lake.

"I want to emphasize however, that my acceptance of this study does not in any way mean that the project has been approved to proceed," said the minister. "It means that the environmental study has been conducted and completed in accordance with the terms of reference stipulated by the Department of Environment and Labour as part of the environmental assessment process."

"The next step in the process is for me to bring this matter to Cabinet to decide whether or not this project should proceed," said Minister Langdon.

The Environmental Impact Statement also included component studies on fish and fish habitat, water resources, caribou and avi fauna (birds and raptors).

It should be noted that the federal government is also reviewing this project under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
