The proponent plans to construct a crab shell crushing and drying operation at the existing crab processing plant in Witless Bay. The operation will be located next to the existing crab processing plant and will utilize the discarded cooked crab shells. The crushed crab shells will be shipped to oversees markets for the production of chitin and will reduce the amount of waste crab product requiring disposal from the plant. The undertaking was registered on July 20, 1999; public comments must be received by August 20, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on September 2, 1999. ENVIRONMENTAL PREVIEW REPORT SUBMITTED:
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has submitted the Environmental Preview Report (EPR) for the Granite Canal Hydroelectric Development. The guidelines for the preparation of the EPR were issued to the proponent in May of 1997. The EPR is available to the public and comments may be submitted in writing to the minister. August 18, 1999 is the deadline for the receipt of public comments.
