The proponent proposes to permit the use of all female diploid (reproductive) steelhead trout for use in seacage aquaculture in Bay d'Espoir. Currently only female triploid (non-reproductive) steelhead are used, which has resulted in high food conversion rates, low market weight and incidence of disease and mortality. The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture expects that the use of all female diploid steelhead will alleviate these problems and improve the economics of the industry. The undertaking was registered on June 14, 1999; public comments are due on July 16, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on July 29, 1999. A guide to the Environmental Assessment Process is available from the Department of Environment and Labour. The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
