Minimum wage increase

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, announced today in accordance with the commitment made in the 1999/2000 Budget, that government has taken the necessary steps to ensure the province's minimum wage is increased effective October 1, 1999.

The regulations to give effect to the increase were published today in the Newfoundland Gazette. The province's rate will increase on October 1 from $5.25 an hour to $5.50 an hour. This will raise the province's minimum wage to a level comparable with the maritime provinces.

The Minister stated: "This will have a positive impact on the income and spending power of people who work in the retail trade, home and child care, and accommodation, food and beverage industries while not imposing undue financial hardship on employers."
