Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

St. Anthony Harbour Development (Breakwater)
Proponent: Town of St. Anthony

The proponent proposes to construct a wharf on the north side of St. Anthony Harbour from the fish plant to Margarite Point. The wharf will be 600 metres long and will accommodate approximately 60 vessels (20 m length) double berthed. The wharf will have sufficient infilling behind to accommodate vehicular access to service vessels while tied up. At the west end of the wharf a passageway will be constructed to permit the movement of small boats to the existing slipways along the shoreline. Areas around the access roads to the wharf will be levelled to provide lay-down space for equipment and gear. The undertaking was registered on May 7, 1999; public comments are due on June 6, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on June 20, 1999.

Stephenville Water Supply Development
Proponent: Town of Stephenville

The Town of Stephenville is proposing to use 10 groundwater wells located in the Ned's Pond to Blanche Brook area to convert their municipal water supply from surface water to groundwater. Development of the groundwater supply will include construction of two 1.2 million US gallon elevated storage tanks, disinfection facility, access roads, power transmission lines and water transmission mains. The undertaking was registered on May 7, 1999; public comments are due on June 11, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on June 21, 1999.

Foxtrap Access Road Horticultural Peat Quarry
Proponent: Polar Construction Limited

The proponent proposes to extract peat from a peat bog located approximately 1.8 kilometres along Incinerator Road, off the Foxtrap Access Road. The peat will be mixed with soil for gardening and horticultural purposes. Peat will be removed from the two hectare site to a maximum depth of 1.5 metres. The total volume of peat to be removed is approximately 10,000 cubic metres and will take place over 10 years. The undertaking was registered on May 10, 1999; public comments are due on June 11, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on June 24, 1999.

REGISTRATION CANCELLED

Victoria Cove Salvage Yard
Proponent: M & M Auto Salvage

The proponent has cancelled the registration of the proposed salvage yard in Victoria Cove.
