New CEO appointed to Workplace Health Safety and Compensation Commission

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour, and Penelope Rowe, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC), are pleased to announce that Cabinet has approved the appointment of George Tilley as chief executive officer of the commission. Mr. Tilley will take up his duties in July 1999.

In his role as chief executive officer, he will report to the board of directors and will be responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the organization.

"I congratulate Mr. Tilley on his appointment. His background in occupational health and safety is particularly important with the commission's expanded mandate," said Minister Langdon. "Given the commission's new direction in health and safety I am sure that he will be a strong and effective leader."

"We welcome the appointment of Mr. Tilley," said Rowe. "He has a strong knowledge of the workers' compensation system which was enhanced in the early 1990s when he served on the Workers' Compensation Appeal Tribunal. I, along with the other members of the board, look forward to working closely with Mr. Tilley."

Mr. Tilley is currently the senior vice president, corporate affairs, for the Health Care Corporation of St. John's.

He holds a masters in business administration as well as a bachelor of commerce degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

WHSCC promotes and supports healthy and safe workplaces in the province and assists employers and workers in managing workplace injuries and return to work planning.
