ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT BULLETIN

Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Grand Falls Sod Farm & Christmas Tree Nursery
(Proponent: The Weed Specialists)

The proponent plans to develop bog land for establishment of a sod farm, Christmas tree farm, a variety of U-picks including strawberries, propagation greenhouses, water garden display area, as well as fields for growing ornamental trees and shrubs west of Rushy Pond and the Beothuck Provincial Park near the TCH. The site proposed for development is 6.1 hectares in area. Construction will include an office/utility shed building measuring nine metres by 15 metres, and four greenhouses measuring six metres by 30 metres each. The undertaking was registered on January 19, 1999; public comments are due on February 19, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on March 5, 1999.

Bishop's Falls Auto Salvage & Recycling
(Proponent: Central Salvage)

The proponent proposes to construct an auto salvage and recycling facility including domestic appliances on Sunset Drive in Bishop's Falls. The proposal involves the operation of a metal salvage yard to process scrap metal, recover reusable auto parts and crush car bodies. The proposed site is 2.8 hectares in area and will be surrounded by a fence. An existing building will be used for dismantling and sales operations. The undertaking was registered on January 18, 1999; public comments are due on February 19, 1999; and the minister's decision is due on March 4, 1999.

MIGRATORY BIRD/BIRDS OF PREY COMPONENT STUDY ADDENDUM SUBMITTED:

Trans Labrador Highway (Red Bay to Cartwright)
(Proponent: Department of Works, Services and Transportation)

The proponent has submitted the Migratory Bird/Birds of Prey Component Study Addendum for the Trans Labrador Highway (Red Bay to Cartwright) Project. The public has until February 21, 1999 to make comments on the addendum. Copies of the document may be obtained by contacting the EA Committee Chairperson Pat Marrie at (709) 729-2813 or e-mail pmarrie@env.gov.nf.ca.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
