Province provides funding to youth groups

Once again this year the Department of Education has provided over $500,000 in grants to a wide variety of youth organizations benefitting 35,000 young people across the province to assist them with their programming for the year.

Monies have been allocated to the Scout and Girl Guide movements in the province as well as the provincial Council of the Boys and Girls Club. Youth centres in St. George's and Labrador City were also provided funding, as were the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program, the Community Services Council Volunteer Centre and the Navy and Army Cadet Leagues of Canada.

"These organizations help to foster through fun and learning the qualities that will help the youth of Newfoundland and Labrador become well-rounded individuals and leaders in their communities." said Education Minister Judy Foote. "I commend the over 6,000 adult volunteers who commit their time and talent to the youth of this province. As well, I congratulate the 200 staff people who maintain the administration of these organizations."

"Government has made its last installment of $50,000 of a three-year $150,000 commitment for the development of a new camp at Northwest Pond for the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of the Girl Guides of Canada," said Minister Foote. "The completion of this 25-acre campsite will provide an ideal setting for the 13,000 active members, both girls and adults, in Newfoundland and Labrador for adventure and leadership in surroundings that stimulate environmental awareness, physical activity and challenge."

"Government has also renewed its commitment of $75,000 to the St. John's School Lunch Association," said Minister Foote. The School Lunch Association helps children take full advantage of their educational opportunities by operating a non-stigmatizing program that provides hot, nutritious lunches to children at school, regardless of their families' ability to pay.
