Newfoundland outperforms all provinces in National Schools Competition

"In the National SchoolNet GrassRoots Communities@ca Competition, four out of the 15 winning schools across Canada were in this province," said Judy Foote, Minister of Education. "This stellar performance speaks volumes about the academic acumen of our students, the skill and commitment of our teachers and the quality of our education system."

Over 100 K-12 schools across the country participated in the competition to research communities and profile them on the Internet. Five national winners and 10 honourable mentions were recognized. The following Newfoundland schools were among them:

WINNERS:                                                     PROJECT:

Fatima Academy, St. Bride's                             A Virtual Tour of the Cape Shore

St. Kevin's Elementary, Goulds                         The Goulds in Newfoundland

Mount Pearl Junior High, Mount Pearl         Mount Pearl Heritage Site

HONOURABLE MENTION:

St. Catherine's Academy, Mount Carmel             Mount Carmel - Mitchells Brook - St. Catherine's

"Our province's performance is indicative of the high level of interest in technology by our students and teachers. Newfoundland and Labrador leads the country in Internet education. All our province's schools were connected to our own Stem-Net system 15 months before the last schools in other parts of the country were connected to the Canada-wide system. This province excels, also, with the number of curriculum content project submissions to the Canada-wide SchoolNet GrassRoots Program. Newfoundland and Labrador led the nation last year with 52 per cent of submissions coming from this province. The technological knowledge our students gain today will help them take their places as leaders for this province in the knowledge-based economy of the future," said Minister Foote.

The winning schools each receive $600 from SchoolNet's GrassRoots Program, as well as software and hardware prizes. The honourable mention award winners each receive $300, and hardware and software prizes.

SchoolNet's GrassRoots Program offers funding to schools to create and implement innovative and interactive learning projects on the Internet that help youth develop academic, employability and information technology skills.

Industry Canada's SchoolNet is a collaborative effort of provincial and federal governments as well as education associations and the private sector, to encourage the integration of information and communications technology in learning.
