Education minister announces school board by-elections

"School boards have been advised that those boards with vacancies that have occurred since the 1998 elections are to hold by-elections on September 30, 1999," said Judy Foote, Minister of Education.

"Vacancies in boards due to the absence of nominations in any zone during the last election will be filled by Cabinet appointment, as required by the Schools Act, 1997," added Minister Foote.

The general public is entitled to vote in the zone in which they are ordinarily resident. Parents whose children are enrolled in a district where they are not ordinarily resident may vote in an election of trustees to the board in that district.

Members of the general public requiring information or persons interested in nominations should contact their local school board office. The nomination period is August 30 to September 3, with the final date for mailing nominations being September 1, 1999.
