Minister joins national colleagues to issue report on post-secondary education

Newfoundland and Labrador's Minister of Education Judy Foote joined with her provincial counterparts at the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) today to release a report on public expectations for post-secondary education.

"The report is a new and important tool for policy making," said Minister Foote. "It states what governments expect in terms of outcomes, and what learners and society can expect of their universities, colleges and technical institutions."

The report was produced through a collaborative effort of nine provinces and territories, with Saskatchewan as the lead province for the project. There was also extensive consultation with education partners. Quebec and Yukon chose to have observer status in the development of the document.

"The expectations complement the mission statement of the Department of Education for Newfoundland and Labrador: to provide affordable, high quality education to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians so that they are able to acquire, through lifelong learning, the knowledge, skills and values necessary for personal growth and the development of society," said Minister Foote.

"Canadians including Newfoundlanders and Labradorians expect post-secondary education to be of high quality, broadly accessible and relevant and responsive to changing societal and economic needs," said the minister. "Education and research are vital for our prosperity, as individuals and as a country in our knowledge-intensive age."

The statement of post-secondary education will be used in a cooperative manner with stakeholders in the post-secondary community to enhance the outcomes from our education system and to help focus priorities.

CMEC is an intergovernmental body made up of the ministers responsible for elementary-secondary and advanced education from the provinces and the territories. Through CMEC, ministers share information and undertake projects in areas of mutual interest and concern.
