Government announces additional measures arising from outdoor resources consultations

Beaton Tulk, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal, and Ernie McLean, Minister of Government Services and Lands, announced today that government has approved limited use of ATVs for the retrieval of big game in areas such as wetlands and barrens.

The changes are effective immediately.

Mr. Tulk said: "This action demonstrates government's continuing response to concerns addressed during the consultation process on the use of outdoor resources."

Mr. McLean said: "Under our revised ATV guidelines, moose and caribou will have to be tagged before they are retrieved. For bears, this does not apply as they are not tagged. There will be a maximum of five trips to retrieve an animal and possession of firearms during retrieval is prohibited."

Mr. Tulk said that government's goal in taking this action was to recognize the valid concerns of different interest groups.

"We want to ensure that the environment is protected while addressing the needs of individuals who require an easier method to retrieve game," Mr. Tulk said. "We have faith in the hunters of this province. We believe that they will follow the new guidelines and respect the environment."

"We will ensure strict enforcement of the new guidelines and we will monitor the effect of the changes," he said. "If we find that these new measures are not working, they will be changed."

On July 6, Mr. Tulk released "Our Smiling Land: Government's Vision for the Protection and Use of Newfoundland and Labrador's Outdoor Resources". Copies of "Our Smiling Land" are available at government's web site at www.gov.nl.ca/whatsnew/ or by writing to Mr. Tulk, c/o Committee on Use of Outdoor Resources, 2nd Floor, West Block, Confederation Building, P.O.
