Minister clarifies statements on White Hills

Development and Rural Renewal Minister Beaton Tulk said today that recent statements by Chris Hickman of White Hills Ski Resort which implied that government was providing further funding for the hill are incorrect.

"It would not be appropriate for government to invest further in White Hills, or provide operating subsidies," said Minister Tulk. "We were approached by Chris Hickman with various options to sustain the viability of White Hills. One of those options included the sale of surplus snow making equipment to Marble Mountain. Government is in the process of facilitating that sale, and the details have not yet been finalized.

"Mr. Hickman was both premature and incorrect in his announcement," noted the minister.

If this sale of capital assets is completed, White Hills Ski Resort will continue to operate for the next ski season.

"Government recognizes that White Hills provides an important economic contribution to the Clarenville area, providing between $2-3 million in revenues beyond the ski slopes. We hope this transaction between resorts is able to sustain White Hills, and give local investors an opportunity to consider additional options, if need be," said Minister Tulk.
