Young people from province heading to South East Asia to promote trade

Six young people from this province have been chosen to represent Newfoundland and Labrador on the 1999 Junior Team Canada Trade Mission to South East Asia. The names were announced today by the Fred Mifflin, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Beaton Tulk, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal.

The students are: Jonathan Butt (St. John's), David Feaver (Corner Brook), Mike Fifield (Mount Pearl), Jenelle Power (Freshwater), Holly Vallis (English Harbour West), and Wayne Walsh (Happy Valley-Goose Bay). The students were selected following training held at Memorial University in May. They will join with 34 other young people from across Canada for the trade mission where they will represent Newfoundland and Labrador companies.

"ln today's global economy, it's important that young people be exposed to trade and international factors that relate to our ability to compete," said Minister Mifflin. "ACOA is pleased to partner with the province to allow our young people an opportunity to participate in this mission where they will develop knowledge and skills to prepare them for leadership roles in the next millennium."

Last year's Newfoundland contingent returned from the trade mission to South-East Asia and held information sessions with their peers, Regional Economic Development Boards (REDBs) and community groups to share what they had learned.

"My department is pleased to participate in this youth-focussed initiative which provides important information on export market opportunities to the zonal boards," said Minister Tulk. "Our youth are vital to our success in regional economic development and their involvement in these types of activities helps them prepare for their roles as future business leaders in the province."

The Junior Team Canada Trade Mission is organized by Global Vision, a national not-for-profit group dedicated to educating young Canadians about the importance of trade in Canada's ability to compete in the global marketplace. Funding for the Junior Team Canada Training Centre held at Memorial in May was provided through the Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement which is administered by ACOA and the Departments of Industry, Trade, and Technology and Development and Rural Renewal.
