Minister congratulates group on organizing show for women entrepreneurs

John Efford, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal (Acting), today applauded the Labrador West Status of Women for organizing a two-day business show called Women on the Move in Community Economic Development. The show starts today, Friday, February 26 and will help local women business owners promote their own businesses and assist women wishing to start new businesses in Western Labrador.

"I am pleased that the increasingly important contribution that women make to community economic development is being recognized," said Minister Efford. "I commend the Labrador West Status of Women and the organizing committee for arranging this show. Exhibitions like these help focus public attention on community business success stories, and provide a forum for the participants to increase and share their knowledge."

The towns of Wabush and Labrador City together have 75 businesses and franchises owned by women, an unusually high number in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Labrador West Status of Women, who organized the show, have partnered with 11 local community organizations and provincial and federal departments including the Department of Development and Rural Renewal. All will have representatives at the exhibition available to provide advice and assistance to entrepreneurs. In addition, some 40 local business women are expected to have booths at the show which is being held in the Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Labrador City.

A series of women speakers including Diane Gear, Director of Economic Development for Labrador City and Wabush; Susan Hollett, a prominent Clarenville businesswoman and chair of the Premier's Council on Social Development; and Heather Bruce-Veitch, Director of Staff at the Iron Ore Company of Canada. MHA Yvonne Jones, member for Cartwright L'Anse au Clair, will speak at the opening on behalf of Julie Bettney, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.

"I am pleased to see the representation of women at this trade show who are here to gain information and learn from each other about starting a business," said Ms. Jones. "It is important that women take an active role in business development as well as take an active role in the overall social and economic development of our communities and province."
