Department wins award at Toronto Craft Trade Show

Department of Development and Rural Renewal's Craft Division has won the award for Best Booth at the Toronto Spring Gift Show. The department's booth was recently re-designed by Newfoundlander Bob O'Brien of Display Arts and was chosen from among 800 exhibitors at the show.

"This award is significant for both the department and the department's clients," said John Efford, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal. "Eight crafts clients use the booth to generate orders for their products at the show. Obviously, the more attractive the booth, the greater opportunity to attract buyers to view Newfoundland and Labrador crafts."

A further five Newfoundland and Labrador companies are operating from their own booths at the show.

The 20 foot by 40 foot booth is eight feet high and uses panels decorated with 19 century windows and arches similar to those found on buildings in the east end of St. John's. Double-hung windows display craft goods and the booth is entered through 10-foot-high arches. The booth breaks down into a dozen small packages for shipment.

The Department of Development and Rural Renewal's Crafts Division provides technical and marketing advice and services to provincial craft producers.

"Our crafts industry has grown five-fold over the last 10 years," said Minister Efford. "Marketing our products at international trade shows is important to the growth of the industry which contributes over $25 million a year to the provicial economy."

The four-day Toronto Spring Gift Show runs from February 21 to 24. It is a wholesale trade show that attracts up to 12,000 buyers from across North America.
