Infrastructure for Stephenville Projects

Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, together with Stephenville MHA Kevin Aylward and Cecil Stein, Mayor of the Town of Stephenville, today announced funding arrangements to install a new sanitary sewer extension which will service both the new stadium and the new health centre for Stephenville.

The tender for the project, which closed on November 2, was awarded to West Coast Excavating Limited of Corner Brook.

"Government has entered into a cost-sharing arrangement for the new system," said Minister Matthews. "Under the arrangement, the Town of Stephenville will pay one third of the cost and government will provide the remaining two thirds funding for the project, which has a total cost of $172,286.

"This project serves as an excellent example of cooperation between the provincial government and municipality in working together. The Department of Works, Services and Transportation has worked closely with town officials to design the new system and to award contracts in connection with the work."

According to MHA Kevin Aylward, the new sewer extension is necessary for two major capital works projects ongoing for the Stephenville area. "We have to invest in the necessary infrastructure for a new health centre, and for a new stadium. After discussions with the town, a cost-sharing arrangement for a system to service both facilities was the best option."

Mayor Stein thanked Minister Matthews and his staff for the expeditious and resourceful manner in which they evaluated his request for this project. "The system will now be completed before winter, and a temporary septic system will not have to be constructed for the new stadium as originally planned," said Mayor Stein.
